What are Settlements and how can our dependency on natural resources and Human Economic Activity affect the Physical Environment?:)
Your Humanities teacher might tell you that without natural resources, we couldn't possibly have all the stuff we own today and we won't be able to lead our daily lives. He would say that our dependency on natural resources could affect the environment. You could wonder, 'if we need natural resources to lead our daily lives, how can it possibly affect the physical world?" It can affect the physical world by helping destruct our natural world.
First of all, let me tell you the causes of settlements. People settle in many certain places because some people are not comfortable in one area and would rather move to a nicer and more comfortable area. These places where people move to are called settlements. Settlements are the places where people live in or choose to live in. Settlements are useful for people because people need to choose a certain spot to live in. Without settlements, everyone would probably sleep on the roads, People wouldn't be able to put their belongings somewhere without being afraid that someone might take them in the middle of the night. There are many purposes of different settlements, for example, the purposes of coastal settlements are: It has many transportation since coasts are popular places to hang out at, and if you love the sea, it is good to live near the coasts. The purposes of In-land and flat are that if there's a tsunami or tidal waves, the coastal settlements are more likely to get hit than the in-land and flat ones, since they're not near the coast at all. There are different types of settlements, such as the ones I have mentioned above: The In-land and flat settlements and coastal settlements.
There are many ways in Human economic activity for humans to trade. The first way for humans to trade was to trade their belongings and exchange it for someone else's things. This process is called 'Barter'. For example, a cook needs vegetables from a farmer to cook his or her meals, and in trade, he gives meals for the farmer to pay him back for getting his vegetables. But the modern way humans trade and the most common way of trading is using money to pay for our lives. You can't live without money. You need money to buy food, you need money to buy a house, you need money to get a good education and overall, you need money to survive. People who have no money cannot live happily as rich people do. There are many ways to farm too, such as Arable farming and pastoral farming. Arable Farming is when Arable farmers plough the land, sow the seeds and grow plants to harvest, such as Corn, Wheat, Soy beans and vegetables. It involves more on crops and land. Pastoral Farming involves more on animals and cattle, such as cows. We need cows for milk, cheese and meat, hens and chickens for eggs and meat and sheep for meat and wool.
Human Economic activity has changed over the years by having Industrialization improved, and now most of the work that we used to do are being done by big machines, such as tractors or chainsaws to cut trees or dig. Most of our belongings today also isn't wood. Sometimes it's metal, glass, steel, or concrete. There are glass tables, metal cabinets or iron safes in the bank. Most of the changes are caused by Industrialization. It is also changed because we can take natural resources and create materials, such as paper and fabric. We get paper through trees, and without natural resources, Industrialization might not be possible.
There are many bad effects that settlement patterns and human economic activities have on the environment. To make a settlement, we have to cut down a lot of trees standing in that spot and clear it, so humans can build houses to live in. But in result, animals would lose their habitats, since they live in the forests and we cut it down, and without any place where the animals to live in or stay safe from predators, they could die or suffer just because of us. Also, if we cut trees it would mean that we get less oxygen, and we need oxygen to breathe. Most transportation use fossil fuels for gasoline and fuel, since it is the cheapest and most easiest to get than all the other materials. When you use a car, it will burn the fuel and make pollution, which is very unhealthy for the environment. If anyone breathed it, it would be dangerous for their health and could cause breathing problems. In Economic activities, you need natural resources such as wood from the trees to build up sites and Industrialization. As explained above, cutting trees are dangerous and not a good thing to do often.
There are some solutions we can consider to this problem to prevent more damage to the environment. We could protest to the government and make them allow cars and motorcycles only for two times a week. We should also make the government ban transportation that makes a lot of air pollution, such as ojeks, bajays, Uber, and Gojek. Not only will this prevent pollution and reduce use of fossil fuel, people would be forced to walk or ride a bike, which would be good for their health. We could also tell people that cut down trees for a living that if they want to cut down trees, be sure to plant more of them.
I understand that physical, human and environmental geography are interdependent. Our dependence on the physical world allows us to lead our lives and meet our needs by giving us natural resources. Humans also use coal and fossil fuels to create electricity, fuel or gasoline, so we can read at night and do normal things at night too. Electricity generates our Television, Stereos, Computers, charging our mobile phone and any other gadget you own. In result, Animals suffer too by having their habitats cut down or being the victim of an oil spill. And if we cut trees, we won't get oxygen. We also can't get electricity from coals all the time since it is non-renewable.
In this essay, we now know the causes of functions of settlements, different types of settlements, changes in human economic activity, how settlement patterns and human economic activities affect the environment, solutions to human environmental impact and my understanding that physical, human and environmental are interdependent. Next time you wonder about settlements, human economic activities and the connections between physical, human and environmental geography, remember that without natural resources, all of these wouldn't be possible.
How can the 8 common features of civilization and the interaction of individuals help civilization grow and advance?
" Mom! We're taking a field trip!" Robert Collins shouted. Robert Collins was standing by the door, holding a backpack and a cap. In front of him was his best friends, Christie Phillips, Brian Sylvester and Lianna Duvall. They were going to the Individuals & Societies Discovery Centre in Texas City, Texas, USA. The objective was to research for their Humanities Project based on the question, " How can the 8 common features of civilization and the interaction of humans help civilization grow and advance?". " Yes, darling, don't forget your homey Peanut Butter Chocolate Toast!" They went to the bus stop and waited for the public bus to pass by the Dahlia Lane, the Collins' street. The bus arrived and they sat on the bus until the bus driver shouted, " Individuals & Societies Discovery Centre! Last stop before the airport!" They climbed out, paid the bus fare and climbed up the steps to the vast, ancient looking building with the logo Individuals & Societies Discovery Centre. They found a tour going on, and they decided to join it. The tour guide said with a loud, clear voice: " Welcome one, Welcome all! Welcome to the Individuals & Societies Discovery Centre! I am Ms. Joyful Sinclair. Call me Joy. Today, I will answer any questions you have concerning Humanities." Brian raised his hand. " What are the 8 common features of Civilization?" " The 8 Common Features of Civilization is common features that help the Rise of Civilization grow and advance. These are the 8 common features: Cities, Established Religion, Well-organized government, Job specialization, Arts & Architecture, Social Classes, Writing and Public Works. All of these has contributed to the rise of civilization. Any more questions? Now, we shall begin this tour."
"First of all, you should imagine what life is like in the early civilization. Everything is hard. You must survive. There are a few starting points that helped civilization grow and advance. First, does anyone know what are hunter gatherers?" No one answered. " All right, hunter gatherers are the group of people that have to hunt to survive and to keep and gather what they have as long as possible. Remember, people these days can simply buy their food in grocery stores or supermarkets. In the early times, there are no markets, no anything. People must hunt or get their own food and make it last as long as possible." Christie raised her hand. " The development of tools are also important right?" " Yes." answered Joy. " The development of tools were one of the starting points of civilization. Tools are needed to do our daily activities easily, to build, to help you make and create objects. One example of a simple tool is your silver wares. You need silver wares to eat politely, and cutting knives to slice something. Domestication of Plants and animals are also important, because they are used for what they produce and benefits us. For instance, a dog needs to be tame and trained to be able to watch your house for burglars or crooks, chickens for eggs and meat or cows for milk, meat, cheese, etc. "
"Today, the 8 common features of civilization has developed a lot. Cities get more advanced, Religions are more respected and established and arts and architecture grow more advanced. Writing can be done using printing machines, and instead of only writing in books, people create newspapers, magazines, websites, pamphlets, brochures, etc. Job Specialization makes people get jobs easily, and the governments is now absolutely organized. There are proper elections, government are needed to approve of building a new building, and without government, every country in the world such as the United States 0f America or Indonesia would not be what they already are and even more advanced today. Social Classes are also not that strict. Kings and Presidents are still the most important people, but others are treated equally, such as farmers being just as important as salesmen or women, or pop celebrities just as important as famous authors and inventors.Public works are still the same. People make or donate something to show in public or to everyone, just like olden times. For example, a sultan built the Taj Mahal for his wife, but in the end it was a public work and visitors allowed. Has everyone learned a lesson? " Joy asked. "YES!!" And with that, the four teenagers went out to work on their project.

Modern Civilizations benefits from the inventions and innovations of past civilizations and the spread of ideas and culture.
Did you ever look around and see what you have? Chopsticks, toilet paper, cannonballs, delicious noodles, arches, sailboats and more. If you are not aware, let me tell you that all the things mentioned above are inspired by the old innovations and inventions of Greeks, Romans and Chinese. Fascinating isn't it! The Ancient inventions and innovations have inspired more modern civilizations and inventions than you think. Thanks to the Greeks, Romans and Chinese, we are able to own what we have now.
In my Humanities class, we follow up on our statement of inquiry, "Modern civilizations benefits from the inventions and innovations of past civilizations and spread of ideas and culture." What a mouthful! Let me tell you what it means. It means that most of our stuff, like the things mentioned in the first paragraph were influenced by old Greek, Roman and Chinese inventions. In fact, people make new objects that resemble the three countries' products. One example of what the Chinese influenced is the Korean temple roofs. It's temple roofs were influenced by Chinese building roofs. Their roofs are both are curved upward at the edge of the roofs. For Romans, people use their domes, arches, temples and others for religious buildings. Some people follow up the Greek's footsteps and go hunt, use sailboats, although the people modify it to cruises and farming. There are also many things that we still use that the people in Ancient Times created long ago.
There is a reason why Chinese are able to create their own unique cultures and traditions rather than being influenced by other countries. The Chinese are able to create their own cultures and traditions through geographical isolation. Now, you may be wondering what the meaning of geographical isolation is. Geographical isolation is when a settlement or country lives independently without much help from other neighboring countries. To put it in words, China used to be geographically isolated, and that is how they came to develop their own unique cultures and traditions, which most countries don't do.
The Global Context, 'Orientation in Space and Time', shows us that to be able to create all the Ancient inventions and innovations, they need to have the space and time to do it. I'm not talking about outer space, the space outside the earth, but the space where you need a place to work or do something in. Our key concepts also tells us about how the ancient innovations influenced modern objects. There are Culture, Power, Sustainability, Civilization and Ideology. Their culture has influenced our cultures and traditions in some unique ways. Power is needed, because with no power, The innovations will be laughed at and not respected as Chinese, Roman and Greek innovations. Sustainability is applied when the people support and confirm that their innovations are decent enough to use and inspire people all around the world. Civilization is needed because, when people gather and share ideas, the final product will be more super-colossal and ingenious. Ideology is used when the people come up with ideas to create the objects that in the future days influences people. No Ideology, No creation. Its as simple as that.
There are quite a list of Ancient inventions that we still use today, but since there are so many innovations that influences us, i won't be mentioning every one of them except the most popular ones. There are noodles, toilet papers, naval mines, arches, domes, sailboats, kites , paper and more. We still use noodles of course. It is a popular type of food and very delicious. We also find toilet paper very useful. It is very important when a person goes to the toilet to 'mind their business' (poop and pee). without toilet paper, we would be in bigger trouble than i can describe. Unfortunately there is no way of saying it politely and appropriately, so i must move on. Arches and domes are for religious places, sailboats are to travel , and temples are for people to worship in. People also use naval mines for warlike reasons. It is a quick way to destroy many armed forces, although very dangerous also. Silk is used for clothing and bedspreads. Kites is also very fun to play with when the wind is strong. But most of all, EVERY civilized person would use paper. Paper is used to write on, record things, draw, printing pictures, made into posters and others.
So Therefore, Ancient Influences has inspired more of our modern inventions and innovations than we can imagine. It grieves me to think that the Greeks, Romans and Chinese didn't receive as much credit as they deserved, although China did get the lion's share of the credits. We have to look back at the start of all our things in our environment and realize that if the Greeks, Chinese and Romans did not create all the innovations and inventions, we wouldn't be using toilet paper, paper, boats, make architecture and other stuff. That is why I think, Ancient Influences have helped to make a lot of inventions in our modern world. No Ancient Influences means the Modern world will never be as it is today.
